Mammography is safe, simple and quick. A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that can detect a breast abnormality when it is no larger than the head of a pin, long before it can be felt or become a serious health concern. Early detection helps to avoid the need for more radical treatment.
Saint Louise Regional BreastCare Center uses state-of-the-art low-dose equipment which poses even less health risk than a chest X-ray. The films can be taken at different angles and, in some cases, can magnify a specific area. The breast is placed on a film holder and is gently compressed to get an accurate result. Pictures are then taken from different angles. This is one of the primary methods of screening for lumps.
Saint Louise Regional Hospital BreastCare Center's mammography facilities are certified by the Food and Drug Administration and accredited by the American College of Radiology.
Advanced Methods of Detection are also available at the BreastCare Center and include ultrasound, cyst aspiration, fine needle aspiration, core biopsy, stereotactic needle biopsy, needle localization biopsy and excisional biopsy.
